The Applicability of Lomheim’s Model on English into Persian Subtitling Translation

It is impossible to imagine the world without cinema and audiovisual productions. Films are influential part of these products as they reach vast masses of worldwide population. By the invention of sound, the films gained more than just sound effects, they gained dialogue and as the cinematography was spreading rapidly internationally, the need for translating films into different languages has emerged. Audiovisual translation had been neglected by academics for over half a century. The evaluation of AVT as a field of study may be clearly seen from the different names like multimedia translation for this area over the years. Among the different AVT modes, subtitling is a key technique for facilitating communication with viewers all over the world. Subtitling is subject to limitations imposed by time and space factors. In order to breach these constraints, subtitlers should adopt different strategies in their attempts to convey film plots or content to target language audiences. This study aimed to investigate the applicability of Lomheim’s model of subtitling strategies on English into Persian subtitling and to determine the most common used strategies. The study was a comparative, descriptive analysis of five English films in different genres with Persian subtitles. The results indicated that all strategies proposed by Lomheim were applicable to the subtitling of the selected films. The two most frequently used strategies were reduction and expansion. Reduction comprises two strategies which are compression and omission. Compression is identified as the ideal method because its quantitative reduction does not involve significant semantic reduction. Expansion should be used in the case of explicitation of contextual information so that the SL and TL audiences can have almost the same response.
