Application of Newmark’s strategies to the translation of culture- specific items in Boofe koor and Dash Akol

Abstract:

Persian stories are replete with words and expressions that only belong to the Iranian culture. Translation of these words is very important because, readers from other cultures can understand them and become familiar with the culture to which these words belong. That’s why their translation from one language into another is really a difficult task, because it needs hard work and precision. Thus, this study was performed to find out how these culture bound items are translated by translators and what kinds of translation strategies they use in order to translate them. In addition, to determine the most frequent strategy and the least frequent ones according to the strategies suggested by Newmark. In this study two popular Persian stories were selected along with their English translations. It has to be mentioned that this research was a qualitative one and its findings showed that transference was the most frequent strategy while literal translation was the least frequent one.
