Retranslation: the Study of Berman Theory on Dichotomy between Domestication and Foreignization and

 Problem of Aging

Abstract

The advent of Retranslation Hypothesis goes back to 1990s, when Berman claimed that translations are an incomplete act which can complete themselves through retranslations. The kind of completion Berman had in mind relates to the success of translations in getting closer to source text. This study was conducted to prove the invalidity of Berman theory in Persian translations of classics. The framework which was used in this study is an eclectic one. By applying Berman theory and with the help of Venuti’s dichotomy of domestication and foreignization, the study revealed that the theory is inapplicable in the case of Persian translations. This result lead to the conclusion that Iranian translators preferred to make the target text closer to target language, rather than the source language.
