DERRIDA, LACAN, TRAUMA AND LITERATURE: THE CASE OF THE WASTE LAND

Abstract

This thesis concerns itself with the concept of literature and studies literature as an institution that bears within itself an affirmation of its impossibility; an institution that questions itself. Due to utilization of Derridean and Lacanian insights and discourses, the possibility of such interweaving is studied. Trauma or the encounter with the Lacanian Real is introduced as the source of possibility and impossibility of every institution. Literarity, therefore, is regarded only as intentionality toward the text, meaning that there is nothing in the text itself that obliges a literary reading of it

The Waste Land is dealt with and is suggested to render a philosophical experience on the impossibility of literature as an institution through a dissection of linguistic elements and trapping the attention of the reader in the written text as the path to meaning. The poem, finally, is observed to be capable of remaining perpetually ethical, in Lacanian sense, since it keeps reinventing itself.
