The Effect of Teaching in Baluchi on the Learning of English Grammatical Structures by Third Grade Iranian Baluch High School Learners

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to investigate the effect of using Baluchi language as the first language for teaching grammatical structures of English. At the same time, the current research makes an attempt to see whether using mother tongue which is Baluchi would bring about a significant difference in the level of motivation among Baluch students. For this purpose, 60 high school Baluch students were selected based on availability and accessibility to achieve the mentioned aims of the study. Two groups were selected and a Nelson Proficiency test was conducted to examine their homogeneity, the first one being the control group in which grammatical structures were taught through the medium of Persian language which is the dominant language in the contemporary educational system of Iran. On the other hand, the experimental group was taught through Baluchi language which is the first language of both groups. At the same time, the Motivation Questionnaire was distributed to both groups to see whether there would be any significant difference with regard to the level of motivation. Pearson Correlation, T test and two-tailed ANOVA was used to collect the data. The results showed that there was not any significant effect on teaching Baluchi to learners and also, there was not a significant effect on their level of motivation.
