EXPLORING IDEOLOGIES IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS DISCOURSE: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF THE UKRAINIAN NEWS FROM THREE INTERNATIONAL NEWS AGENCIES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF VAN DIJK

This thesis studies the representation of Ukrainian Issues in three international news agencies: a) USA Today, b) The St. Petersburg Times and c) Iran daily. To do this, the analytical components of van Dijk’s frameworks were used to analyze 51 headlines, leads, and full-text news stories. The results of the study indicated that there are some differences in the representation of Ukrainian Issues. It expresses that, The St. Petersburg Times and Iran daily have focused on the headlines and leads more than news reports in conveying the issues and their ideological moves, while USA Today has focused on the news reports. Regarding discourse style, the complexity of sentences, the lexical style, lexicalization, and word order of first sentences in the leads, ideological moves are seen more in Iran daily and The St. Petersburg Times. Regarding thematic organization, there is a balance in putting the headlines based on the similarity of the issues in three news agencies, but there is an imbalance in stating the issues directly or indirectly. It describes the issues and conveys the ideological moves objectively by using authority and number game focusing on the news reports more than headlines and leads. USA Today has shown Russia more negative.
