The study of transgenders’ discourses and translation in

subtitling based on  Harvy’s strategies

Transgenderism is a new concept in translation studies that like its social aspects is neglected. Images of masculinity and femininity are frequently exploited in popular culture. In multimedia text types in particular, audiences derive aesthetic pleasure and manage to interpret gender performance by altering their focus on the visual and verbal codes. In translating transgenders’ performance, verbal codes need a special attention to convey the meaning into another culture and language. Considering Harvy’s (2000) strategies, this study has been carried out to examine the differences of transgenders’ discourses in English and in Persian subtitles and whether the aesthetic features and the function of the discourse could be transferred. It showed the situations that Harvy’s strategies could be applied. The results showed that the translator did not attempt to transfer the aesthetic features and sufficed to the transfer of the meaning. Harvy’s strategies were almost not applied in translation, and cultural filter was applied where it was possible.
