The Potentials of Critical Discourse Analysis to Improve the Reading Comprehension of Iranian Pre

-University Students

Abstract

This study implemented the principles of critical discourse analysis to foster the reading comprehension ability of Iranian pre-university students. 57 homogenous female pre-university students were selected from a female pre-university school in Bandar Abbas as the participants of the study using the Nelson test. The subjects were divided randomly into an experimental group with 28 students and a control group with 29 students.  Then, a reading comprehension test as pretest was given to both groups. In the next stage, the experimental group were instructed resorting to the principles ofcritical discourse analysis and the control group were instructed through a traditional approach. Effectively, the both groups received forty-hour instruction in which twenty reading passages from Molaii and Anari’s (2008) New bridging the Gap were covered. The both groups took the same pretests and posttests. Five reading passages including 20 multiple choice reading comprehension questions were used as the pretest and posttest of this study.. Finally, the results were put in SPSS 15 and were analyzed using t-test statistics. The results indicated that the students in the experimental group performed better than their counterparts in the control group, which proved the superior role of teaching reading based on Critical Discourse Analysis.
