A Survey of Feminist Translation Strategies in the translation of the Novel “A Room of One’s Own”

Abstract

Translation, known as a political activity, is considered as a powerful tool to identify power relations in the society. After the establishment of feminist school in translation, feminist translators demonstrated their manipulations and meddling in their works, in order to subvert the assigned subordinate position of women in the society and literature. The present research intended to investigate the used feminist translation strategies in the translation of the book A Room of One’s Own, written by Virginia Woolf (1928) and translated by S. Nourbakhsh (1983). In order to perform the analysis, two steps were taken. In the first step, after reading the entire source text, according to the model suggested by Mills (1995), which analyzed the entire source text on three levels of word, sentence and discourse, the appropriate sections were strategically selected, and in the second step, based on von Flotow’s (1991) suggested practice of feminist translation strategies, as prefacing, footnoting, supplementing and hijacking, the correspondent translations of those appropriate parts were investigated. The gained results showed the kinds of feminist translation strategies and their frequency, which was significantly low, on the account that the translator intended to remain faithful to the content and style of the original writer.
