A Survey-Based Study of Two Persian Translations of “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin through Reader-Response Criticism

MA English Translation

Abstract

The present study deals with the evaluation of literary translation. While most of the literature in Translation Studies analyses the process or product of translation, this study is receptor-oriented. The researcher used Nida’s theory of dynamic equivalence for evaluation of literary translation. Based on this theory, if the TL reader’s comprehension of the TT is the same as the SL reader’s comprehension of the SL text, the translation can be considered adequate. Therefore, the researcher used reader-response criticism to inquire about the readers’ understanding of the translation. The corpora used for this study were two Persian translations of Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” which were translated into Persian by one male and one female translator. The researcher prepared a reader-response questionnaire based on Payandeh’s feminist criticism of the story. Fifty subjects read each translation of the story and answered the questionnaire. Based on the limited statistical data of this study, it was revealed that none of the translators was successful to create a similar response in the TL readers. Furthermore, based on the results of this study, the female translator indicated better performance in creating a similar response in the TL readers.

Key words: literary translation, dynamic equivalence, reader-response criticism, interpretive community, feminist criticism
