A COMPARISON OF AUTHORSHIP PROJECTED IDENTITY IN ENGLISH RESEARCH ARTICLES WRITTEN BY IRANIAN SCHOLARS IN HUMANITIES AND ENGINEERING

Abstract

The genre of research article has become a significant area of research in academic writing over the past two decades. However, authors’ identity in research articles has not received much attention. Thus, this study intended to investigate how authors, Iranian researchers in this case, projected themselves in their articles.

The study ran a quantitative and contrastive analysis on Iranian writers’ authorial presence markers in research articles in the two groups of science Engineering and Humanities. The corpus of this study consisted of 120 research articles written and published by Iranian scholars in English. For each group of science, 60 articles were selected randomly from a pool of journals, out of which 30 were single-authored and 30 were multiple-authored. All the 120 papers were examined for three authorial markers, namely personal pronouns, self-citations, and self-mention terms.

The results of the study showed that personal pronouns were the most salient authorial markers in the corpus. The findings also suggested that authorial markers varied in terms of frequency in Engineering and Humanities as well as in single-authored and multiple-authored articles. Authorial markers in Engineering articles outnumbered those in the Humanity articles. It was also observed in this study that authorial markers were more frequent in multiple-authored than in single-authored articles.
